I think every place to live has its pros and cons – the city with its hustle and bustle, opportunities, and new adventures, and the village with its peace, greenery, and closeness to nature. I’ve had the chance to live in both places, and today I want to tell you how that choice changed my view of the world. And now I ask you, as always: So do you live in the city or in the village? 😂
I’m 24 years old, and the first 18 years of my life were spent in a village, in a small county near Poznań. My grandfather had a garden where he grew vegetables and fruits, and my grandmother took care of the birds and small animals. Every morning I woke up to the sound of birds, went to the well for water (because in our village we still didn’t have running water in all the rooms), and after school I helped my grandfather tend the land.
I think the village is a place where everyone knows everyone. The neighbors always helped each other in difficult times – if someone had trouble with their crops, others would come to help; if there was any celebration, the whole village would gather. We had a lot of time for ourselves, for family, for friends. We met in the park under the tree, played games in the fresh air, and in the evening sat on the porch and listened to my grandfather’s stories about his youth.
But when I finished high school, I decided to move to the city – to Poznań, to study journalism. I was curious about what the city had to offer: new friends, various events, development opportunities, cinemas, theaters, shops. The first week in the city was magical for me – I saw tall buildings, crowds of people, cars, heard the noise and music from the streets. I was excited because it was everything I’d dreamed of.
But over time, I started to miss the village. The city was loud, noisy, and it was hard to find peace. People didn’t know each other – the neighbors in my apartment building didn’t talk to each other, even if they met in the elevator. School work was hard, I had a lot of responsibilities, and there was little time for myself. I often sat in my small room and thought about my grandfather’s garden, the birds, the fresh air, and the peace.
I think the biggest difference between the city and the village is that in the city we focus on ourselves, on our careers, on opportunities, while in the village we focus on family, on neighbors, on nature. In the city, I had the chance to learn new things, develop, but I missed that warmth and closeness I had in the village.
After graduating, I made a decision: to live in the city, but to go to the village to see my grandparents every weekend. That way I can enjoy all the advantages of the city – work, friends, events – and at the same time enjoy the peace and warmth of the village. Today I have a great job as a reporter, I have many friends, and every weekend I go to the village, help my grandfather in the garden, talk to the neighbors, and relax.
Now I ask you again: So do you live in the city or in the village? 😂 Do you prefer the hustle and bustle of the city and its opportunities, or the peace and closeness to nature in the countryside? I think you don’t have to choose just one – you can combine both worlds, like me. But everyone has their own preferences, everyone chooses what’s best for them. Remember, there’s no better or worse place – there’s only what fits your heart.
