The Econlockhatchee River, known as the Econ to locals, is the second largest tributary of the St. John's River and runs 36 miles through Orange and Seminole Counties. It is designated as an "Outstanding Florida Waterway, making it singled out for preservation by the state. The Econ is one of the last unspoiled rivers in Florida, and it is constantly at the center of controversy between environmentalists and developers. 19 miles of the river between SR 419 in Oviedo and the St. Johns River is designated as a state paddling trail for canoes and kayaks. There are numerous Indian Mounds along the the sandy banks and the river is home to diverse wildlife such as alligators, wild turkeys, deer, black bear, sand hill cranes, bald eagles, and a variety of wading birds.
