In this video I show you how I prepare & eat the wild game that my red-tailed hawk catches, and talk a bit about some other things like the global food trade and local eating.
➳ Helloooo friends!! Just in case you ever wondered what squirrel tastes like, I figured I'd give you a little insight 😉 For those of you who may just be finding my channel, the context here is that I am a licensed falconer, meaning that I hunt with trained birds of prey.
With my hawk Kara, I hunt small game like eastern gray squirrels and cottontail rabbits.
Some of this meat I keep for her to eat, and some of it I prepare for myself, friends, and family to eat and enjoy an honest connection to this land that sustains us.
(NOTE: I filmed this video back in the beginning of December, it seriously took me forever to get this done 😪 But I need to include this disclaimer to say that we were not gathering during the second waves of lockdown here in Ontario).

🕶 PLEASE READ ME:
I want to elaborate on and clarify a couple of things that I speak about in the first half of this video (or you can just read this and skip listening to me talk to a camera).
I talked a little bit about the importance of local eating/agriculture, how I believe that lifestyles/ideologies such as vegetarianism & veganism are very beneficial in so many ways, but that I think there are still a lot of extremist people out there forming opinions and perceptions based on heavily emotionally biased headlines, instead of drawing their perceptions from real world, first degree experiences.
Because of this, I have seen a number of people who are missing a huge point when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint through diet - the significance of responsible farming and hunting!! Yes it does exist. I can't say it loud enough.
There are so many ways to explain how meat/animal products aren't inherently evil, yet also show how in today's world we've horribly perverted what it means to farm or hunt. But this is not that video ;)
~ Of course everyone is going to have a different opinion and I COMPLETELY understand the many reasons why people choose not to eat meat/animal products.
The last thing that I want is for anyone to watch this and think I'm bashing on vegans/vegetarians! I simply want to illustrate the fact that topics such as this are rarely black and white, and that perhaps we should all be looking at the global food trade vs attacking people for their lifestyles/diets?
I myself was vegetarian for almost 2 years and "dabbled" with veganism, though that didn't last long since I grew up on a farm. I also was not keen on hunting until I became a falconer. So I see many different sides of the great debate that is anti-hunting/anti-eating meat vs regular people just trying to live their lives as responsible farmers or hunters. ~
In summary, I really just wanted to say that I am of course not qualified to dissect the nuances of the global food trade and all of it's pros & cons.
I am only a person who is passionate about practicing genuine gratitude for this land we're all living on, developing a connection to the foods that sustain me, and sharing with people the various insights taking up my brain space in the hopes of inspiring critical thinking.
