Chatterley Whitfield coal mine in Stoke-on-Trent employed 4,000 people and was the first UK mine to produce 1 million tonnes of coal per year. After it closed for business in 1977, the site became the country’s first mining museum, with former miners taking visitors 700 feet underground for a unique tour of the tunnels.
