“Relinquishing the Fruits Of Action” | A Talk in English by YSS Sannyasi Swami Smaranananda Giri

How can we truly live this divine counsel and free ourselves from the binding fruits of action, which cause the soul to return again and again in reincarnation? On October 12, senior sannyasi of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, Swami Smaranananda Giri, presented a talk in English on verses 47 to 51 of Chapter II of the Bhagavad Gita, titled “Relinquishing the Fruits of Action.”

Drawing upon Paramahansa Yoganandaji’s commentary on the Bhagavad Gita in the book God Talks With Arjuna, Swamiji illuminated Krishna’s call to action: to engage energetically in life’s duties, but without ego or attachment — as Paramahansaji says, “to work intelligently, ambitiously, keenly! striving to create the right fruits of action, not for oneself, but for God and all His children.”

An ordinary person might misunderstand this teaching, thinking: “If I am to relinquish the fruits of action, why not give up action itself, along with its challenges?” But the yogi learns that it is not action that binds, but attachment. The spiritual person realizes that God is the Doer, and that yoga is, as Yoganandaji defines it, “the art of proper action.”
