Turmeric Leaf Dumplings | Arasina ele Kadubu (Gatti) | Manjal Da Retha Adye | Patholi
There are some recipes that carry the soul of our homes and festivals 🌿✨. Turmeric Leaf Dumplings are one of the most loved traditional dishes prepared during festive times in South India. Known as Arasina Yele Kadubu (Gatti) in Kannada, Manjal Da Retha Adye in Tulu, and Patholi in Konkani, this dish is a nostalgic favorite that brings families together.
The unique flavor and aroma from fresh turmeric leaves is what makes this dish so special. These leaves are available only during the festival season — from Nagara Panchami to Navaratri — making it a true seasonal delicacy.
👉 Note: You can also use banana leaves instead of turmeric leaves, but the distinct aroma and taste of turmeric leaves will be missing.
Ingredients:
White dosa rice – 3 cups
White boiled rice – 1 cup
Cardamom – 2 tbsp
Jaggery – 3 cups
Salt – as per taste
Coconut – 1 (grated)
Turmeric leaves – 20 nos
Water – 1.5 cups
Preparation Method:
Wash and soak 3 cups dosa rice + 1 cup white boiled rice in water for 7 hours.
Clean the fresh turmeric leaves thoroughly.
Grind the soaked rice into a thick batter using ~1 cup water (drain soaking water first).
Melt 3 cups jaggery with ½ cup water, strain to remove impurities.
Add 1 grated coconut + 2 tbsp cardamom to the melted jaggery, cook lightly on low flame.
Spread a thin layer of rice batter on a turmeric leaf.
Add a thin layer of jaggery-coconut mixture over the batter.
Fold the leaf as shown in the video.
Steam the dumplings for 1 hour.
The result? Soft, fragrant, golden-sweet dumplings wrapped in the soul of tradition. 🌿
