“Narrative medicine - How studying literary fiction and creative writing can contribute to healthcare professional education and the rehabilitation of chronically ill people.” is the tile of this lecture by Anders Juhl Rasmussen, lecturer at the Institute for Cultural Sciences at the University of Southern Denmark.
Narrative Medicine is a new field in patient treatment based on the reading of literary texts and creative writing exercises. Yet since 2007, it is also an obligatory course at the outset of medical school and, since 2016, a selected course for healthcare professionals bachelors programs. Students train empathy, reflection, and self-reflection through works of literary fiction, and, in doing so, perhaps catch a glimpse of the entire human being behind the diagnosis.
