Whenever you feel like your brain is disconnected from your body, it’s because your brain has registered a threat, such as a traumatic event or memory. It’s trying to cope with the stress through a natural dissociation response.
But no matter how it seems or feels (upsetting, I know), the mind and body will always be connected. It’s just that your mind needs you to give it a little jumpstart — almost like you would a car or a heart — though not that extreme, don’t worry.
The next time you experience this sense of disconnect, like you’re on the outside looking in, do something shocking to help you return to your body.
Try excusing yourself from the conversation for a minute, do some quick exercises like jumping jacks, or grab some ice cubes to hold in your hands or place on your chest.
A cold shower or fizzy drink can work, too — whatever helps you reset, reconnect, and start feeling like a whole being again!
By doing something shocking, you force your body to focus on what is happening in the present moment and make a connection with your mind. This can help you find yourself and feel grounded again.
