In gynecology and obstetrics, the term "loop of cord" or loop of umbilical cord typically refers to a situation known as a nuchal cord during pregnancy. A nuchal cord occurs when the umbilical cord wraps around the baby's neck one or more times. This condition is relatively common and is usually identified during prenatal ultrasounds.
A nuchal cord may not always pose a significant risk to the baby. In many cases, the cord can be easily unwrapped during delivery. However, in some instances, a nuchal cord may contribute to complications during labor and delivery, such as compression of the cord, reduced blood flow, or difficulties in the baby's descent through the birth canal.
