We were also lucky enough to spend half an hour chatting with the head groundsman (there had been a college football game the Saturday before between USC Trojans and Penn State).

Built in 1923 as a memorial to all who served the U.S. Armed Services during World War I, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is the grand old lady of LA stadiums. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984, the year it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field for the Summer Olympics for the second time (1932 was the first). In 2028 it will become the first stadium in the world to host three summer Olympic Games (track and field and parts of the ceremonies).


The stadium serves as the home of the University of Southern California Trojans football team, who completed a $315 million renovation in 2019 (renewing the seating and adding luxury boxes and club suites). The stadium's iconic peristyle features the Olympic rings and cauldron, as well as the Court of Honor plaques commemorating outstanding people who have contributed to the history of the Coliseum (including Nelson Mandela and President John F Kennedy).
