Hello everyone, I hope you're all well and safe. I've wanted to make a "Country Bunny" from spun cotton for many years - one of my favorite books is "The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes" by DuBose Heyward. It was first published in the 1930s and was a classic in our family and I think the story, of a rabbit mother who once dreamed of becoming one of the Easter Bunnies, but has had that dream deferred by her 21 children, is still as relevant today as it was 90 years ago...
As the story goes, "there are really FIVE Easter Bunnies, and those bunnies must be the five kindest, and swiftest, and wisest bunnies in the whole wide world.... One day a little country girl bunny with a brown skin and a little cotton-ball of a tail said, 'Some day I shall grow up to be an Easter Bunny: -- you wait and see!' Then all of the big white bunnies who lived in fine houses and the Jack Rabbits with long legs who can run so fast, laughed at the little Cottontail and told her to go back to the country and eat a carrot. But she said, 'Wait and see!'"
It's a wonderful story, with even more wonderful illustrations. I think Marjorie Flack's bunnies are very nearly as sweet as Beatrix Potter's, though her style is very different. You can certainly follow along with this technique and make your own favorite rabbit character - maybe one of the Flopsy bunnies? Or Peter in his little coat. Or Kate Dicamillo's Edward Tulane...
I have two used copies of The Country Bunny to give away, one to someone here - just leave a comment below if you'd like to be considered to receive one -- and another will go to a newsletter subscriber. I will choose someone from the comments after the first 48 hours of posting this video, or thereabouts (I will probably choose someone on Wednesday, April 16th) so leave a comment by then :) And like I said, feel free to comment from anywhere in the world - things are so terribly sad and mean here in the U.S. right now - but I still believe in kindness and empathy and I want to believe that most people also still value those things, somehow we've just lost sight of what our grand ladies taught us.
Thank you as always for being here with me, for your patience, for your support, and for your kindness. I appreciate hearing from each of you and although I'm behind with comments, I will read them all and those comments help motivate me to keep coming here and sharing. Hoping you can find some peaceful moments for creating or for reading a favorite book -- and wishing you happy making!
