Ernst Moritz Arndt wrote the underlying poem "Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?" in Königsberg in 1813, when he agitated for an uprising of East Prussians against Napoleon on behalf of Freiherr vom Stein. Immediately thereafter, the poem was widely circulated in pamphlets and in various printed venues. Arndt and vom Stein had arrived in Königsberg from St. Petersburg with the Russian army in January 1813, which continued westward from there and arrived in Berlin in March 1813, while the existing censorship against political writings was largely relaxed. On the occasion of the victory over Napoleon and the entry of Blücher's troops into Paris, the song was first performed in Berlin in 1814.

In the lyrics of the song, Arndt first poses the German question and finally calls for a Greater German nation-state that would encompass all German-speaking countries or the German-speaking area of Europe, including Austria and German-speaking Switzerland. One stanza has anti-French tendencies, which can be traced back to its composition during the Napoleonic occupation (French period) and the wars of liberation against it.

Ernst Moritz Arndt (* December 26, 1769 in Groß Schoritz, Rügen; † January 29, 1860 in Bonn) was a German writer, historian, freedom fighter and member of the Frankfurter Nationalversammlung. He devoted himself mainly to mobilizing against Napoleon's occupation of Germany. Arndt is considered one of the most important lyricists of the era of the wars of liberation.
