At a press conference Monday, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially announced they are directing $1.1 million in state funding to clean a site in Ravenna that city residents have complained about for years.
The money will go toward moving more than 6,000 tons of construction and demolition debris currently on the property.
The site on 645 South Chestnut Street has gone through many different life phases. In the early 1900s, it was a food factory, before becoming a Cleveland Worsted Mill, then a rubber company. In 2015, the building was left abandoned.
Ravenna Mayor Frank Seman says from that point on, the buildings on the property became a hub for squatters and thieves.
Seman says people began breaking in to steal copper and valuable metals. Though the city initially invested in increased security to keep people out of the buildings, Seman says they kept breaking in.
The city was finally able to demolish the buildings, but discovered asbestos in the process — one more challenge for the property.
“This has been a very sad case, as well as an irritation to those neighbors, and to the city regularly,” said Seman. “We're just so grateful to the people who’ve worked with us.”
