Napoleon is often remembered as a military genius, but few talk about the dark side of his Egyptian campaign. Behind the facade of science and exploration, he committed horrific acts that would be considered war crimes today.
In 1799, he captured Jaffa, a port city in present-day Israel. Around 4,000 Ottoman soldiers had surrendered. But instead of treating them as prisoners of war, Napoleon ordered their execution — just to avoid feeding them.
Later, in 1798, during the Cairo uprising, he bombed parts of the city and even targeted the sacred Al-Azhar Mosque, killing hundreds of civilians. These brutal actions were masked by a so-called “scientific expedition,” during which artifacts like the Rosetta Stone were stolen and shipped to France.
This video dives into Napoleon’s most controversial and bloody moments in Egypt, revealing the truth behind the myth.
