Pastor Clive Bowser of Union School of Theology preaches Jesus' teaching on the True Vine from John 15. He shows that Jesus speaks these words so that His own joy may be in believers and their joy may be full.
The sermon is framed by three key concepts:
1. Secure in Life,
2. Abiding in Joy,
3. Prayerful Partnership with Jesus.
Clive highlights the truth that believers are securely held in the living vine and are loved by the Father with the same love He has for the Son. This complete acceptance and security means that Christians are "works in progress" and are urged to abide in Christ’s love.
The response to this love is to take off the mask and bring everything—including the things you are ashamed of and struggling with—into the life-giving "shower of Christ’s love". When believers abide, and His words abide in them, they are invited to engage in prayerful partnership, asking whatever they wish to display God’s glory and goodness. Jesus ultimately calls believers "My friend," emphasizing the deeply relational, two-way dance of doing life together in the vine.
