Steve Moal, automotive designer and fabricator, brought out the one of a kind Gatto to this year’s Goodguys West Coast Nationals. The Gatto was on display in the Blackhawk Museums Pavillion where is drew hundreds of guests who were able to admire his craftsmanship up close. Moal explains the inspiration and attention to detail that went into creating such a stunning peace of rolling art.
Moal has not only captured and perfected the classic European "carrozzeria" - or coachwork - techniques long associated with the houses of Zagato, Touring and Pinin Farina, but has taken the assembly and fabrication technique known as "superleggera" to new standards. In this method, which allows the car builder to take more control of distinctive vehicle form, aluminum body panels are shaped by English wheel, hammer and dolly then crimped about a light tubular subframe.
Moal and his work have been featured on shows such as Chasing Classic Cars, where Wayne Carini received his very own custom Moal hot rod ( • A Custom Surprise for Wayne Carini ). He is a member of the Hot Rod Hall of Fame, was Builder of the Year at the 1997 Grand National Oakland Roadster Show, has conducted a number of future automotive design seminars, including a 2003 engagement, "Doing Design to the Hilt," at Stanford University's Department of Engineering.
