China and Hong Kong to allow reciprocal recognition of judgments in civil, commercial court cases

China and Hong Kong have agreed to a deal that makes it easier for parties applying for cases in Hong Kong to be recognised in the mainland and vice versa. This reduces the need for re-litigation. The city is the only jurisdiction to enter into such an arrangement with the mainland. The mechanism is the latest arrangement to pave the way for recognition and enforcement of civil and commercial judgments across the border. Authorities estimate that about 90% of such cases will be covered under the new scheme. Deborah Wong reports.
