This sewing tutorial will show you how to shirr fabric. We'll be shirring a waistband on a simple cotton skirt, creating a kind of smocked waistband. Shirring isn't really as difficult as it looks. The elastic thread does most of the work!
Shirring can be very handy when it comes to needing a bit of extra stretch in waistbands, shirts, skirts, and dresses. When you use shirring in a piece, not only does it provide function, but it also creates added "detail" to the piece, which gives the it more interest. All in all, learning to shirr is easy to do, and definitely has it's benefits, so let's get to it!
