Walter Cronkite wraps up 2 separate editions of The CBS Evening News with tributes to his friend and colleague, NBC News commentator Chet Huntley, both within a 4-year span.
The first goodbye is from July 31, 1970, upon Huntley's retirement from The Huntley-Brinkley Report and NBC News altogether after 14 years, culminating in a brief, humorous take on the program's closing line, "Good night, Chet. Good night, David."
The second is a somber, more permanent adieu: a report on Huntley's passing from cancer on March 20, 1974 at age 62, and a look back on his career, including a clip from the tail end of his and David Brinkley's 3,590th and last NBC Newscast together back on that somber Friday in July 1970.
Goodnight, Chet.
And that's the way it was: Friday, July 31, 1970 and Wednesday, March 20, 1974.
