Germany and the Allies both sought a "knockout blow" to end World War II quickly. The Allies adopted a strategic bombing campaign against German infrastructure and civilian morale, while Germany focused on a U-boat campaign to cripple Britain's supply lines. Early bombing efforts were largely inaccurate and suffered heavy losses, leading to a shift toward area bombing of cities. However, the bombing campaign ultimately failed to break German morale, and it was only with the introduction of long-range fighter escorts that targeted bombing became effective at disrupting German oil supplies and communications. Simultaneously, Germany's U-boat campaign initially wreaked havoc on Allied shipping, but Allied technological advances in radar and code-breaking, combined with the implementation of a convoy system, eventually turned the tide and secured the Atlantic for Allied troop and supply convoys.
