Husqvarna PE 10H SmartGuard helmet
Design for disc cutter to protect against kickback, but I have bought it for chainsaw use.
I have used a chainsaw occasionally for domestic use over the years, but a few years ago I did my basic training CS30 and CS31. It was an eye opener with regard to safety, we were shown images of horrific injuries caused by kickback, all of them professional time served tree surgeons and foresters, infact one of our instructors had a scar across his face , a very experienced forester, just a moments lack of concentration logging a felled tree , caught the tip, head in the wrong place. He was wearing a helmet, the chain brake engaged but he said the force of the kickback caused the bar to hit his head like a very sharp hammer, breaking his helmet and visor, he was very lucky not to loose an eye or worse.
I now work in a woodyard two days a week and regularly use fairly big chainsaws , I have a basic Oregon helmet, but when looking for a new helmet with better protection I have found no chainsaw helmets out there with any kind of kickback protection, the only thing I could find was the Husqvarna SmartGuard which is designed for use with disc cutter, but I think it looks pretty good almost ideal for chainsaw use. I did contact Husqvarna and asked whether it can be for chainsaw use , but they say its not designed for that and sent me links to there standard helmets, I'm guessing it does not have the right certificates for it or has not been tested possibly? To me its looks far better than most chainsaw helmets with offer very little protection.
I will point out, its not a climbing helmet although it has straps it does not comply with EN1731 which I believe climbing helmets need to , it does comply with EN397 which is the same as a standard chainsaw helmet for ground use.
I have used machine and power tools all my working life, big spindle moulders , panel saws , chop saws, planners etc so I have a lot of experience and healthy respect for using dangerous tools, but I believe chainsaws are one of the most dangerous tools out, and to be honest when I started using bigger saws they did scare me a little but with regular use and experience I have built up my skills and confidence massively, but I still have a very healthy respect for them, and a lot to learn.
I am amazed at how many people I see not wearing a helmet or no chainsaw trousers, I always think myself and when I have shown people how to use a panel saw or chop saw safely , just look at what that blade can do to a piece of wood and imagine what it can do to a finger or hand !
Back to the helmet . the quality is great , its comfortable , although I find my oregon helmet more comfortable on the back of the head, but that maybe because its worn in . Its a shame the chin guard does not lift up, but it does feel solid. I like the clear visor, I find sometimes with a mesh visor it can get hard to see when its dusty, raining or the sun is low in the sky , I'm hoping this is better. Its not as quite as easy to put on as a normal helmet and I know I'm going to be laughed at at work ! but I think I would rather that than wear a normal helmet that doesn't really offer much protection.
