Today we visit Alcântara, an area of western Lisbon. The name means "the bridge" in arabic, and refers to an old crossing point that existed here over the small river that used to run along the modern Avenida de Ceuta.
The higher point, where we find the Jardim Avelar Brotero and the Chapel of Sto. Amaro, is usually referred to as "Santo Amaro", and it gives name to the small dock with the restaurants.
The lower, riverside neighbourhood west of the Alcântara Station is sometimes referred to as "Calvário".
