During #Roman times, around the turn of the millennium, a legionary camp (Vetera) and the Colonia Ulpia Traiana (destroyed around 275 AD) were located not far from the city center. In the early Middle Ages, a new settlement arose above the old Roman cemetery, for which the place name Sanctos is recorded from a Latin text of the 9th century the later Xanten with the monastery and then the so-called #Cathedral of St. Victor (8th century). This Latin place name is undoubtedly related to the local Victor saint legend and to graves discovered at the site, which were subsequently interpreted as martyrs' graves. .

However, it is repeatedly falsely recounted in literature that Ad Sanctos, recorded in another Latin text, is synonymous with "To the Saints". In the Nibelungenlied, Santen is mentioned as the alleged birthplace of the hero Siegfried. #Xanten is known as a Roman city, a cathedral city, and a city of #Siegfried. Xanten is the only municipality in #Germany whose name begins with an "X."

In 1977, the Xanten Archaeological Park (APX) opened on part of the former Colonia; it now also houses the LVR Roman #Museum. Between the park and the Rhine, two gravel pit lakes were also converted into the Xanten Leisure Center (Xanten North Sea and Xanten South Sea).

In 1988, Xanten became the first state-recognized recreation area in the Düsseldorf administrative district; it has been a climatic health resort since 2014.
