Marshall Field's State Street Flagship became a Macy's store in 2006. Field's was much more than a department store. This 150+-year-old retail establishment was innovative, influential, legendary, and unique to Chicago. Its block-square building, completed in 1907, was and is an architectural treasure and historic landmark. The family-owned store brought much visibility and vitality to downtown. In fact, Field's became Chicago's #3 tourist attraction.
Today's State Street shopping district is lined with homogenous chain stores found in great numbers throughout the country. None of these retailers is a local brand unique to Chicago.
When last compared, Marshall Field's brands and trade names were valued at $419 million while Macy's brands and trade names were valued at $377 million. This didn't stop Macy's, Inc. from wantonly converting all Field's stores to Macy's and essentially mothballing the Field's brand.
Any insinuation that Field's was "struggling" prior to 2006 is nonsense. Macy's stores simply don't measure up to Field's quality. A recent survey indicated that 4 out of every 5 Chicago shoppers would still rather shop at Field's. Thus, the notion of a reborn Marshall Field's on State, reinvented for the 21st Century, is gaining momentum. The challenge is to convince skeptics, namely Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren and Wall Street, that restoring Field's in quality, service and name would lead to increased profitability.
Where would YOU rather shop? Vote with your wallet by shopping at Carson's, Nordstrom, Von Maur, J C Penney, or Sears instead of Macy's!
