Mythological Significance: According to legend, the Amarnath Cave is where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to his consort, Goddess Parvati. It is also believed that a pair of pigeons overheard this secret and became immortal, and pilgrims often report seeing a pair of pigeons in the cave even today.
The Ice Lingam: The natural ice formation is a unique phenomenon that waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon, reaching its maximum height around the time of the summer festival of Raksha Bandhan. Two smaller ice formations are also present, believed to represent Parvati and their son, Ganesha.
Timing and Duration: The pilgrimage typically takes place for a short period during the summer months of July and August, as the cave is covered in snow for most of the year. The exact dates are announced annually by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB).
Challenging Journey: The Yatra involves a physically demanding trek through rugged, high-altitude terrain, with unpredictable weather conditions. Pilgrims must be physically fit and obtain a mandatory health certificate to undertake the journey.
Routes: There are two main routes for the pilgrimage:
Pahalgam Route: The traditional and longer route (approx. 36–48 km), which typically takes 3-5 days one way, and is more gradual.
Baltal Route: The shorter but steeper route (approx. 14 km), which allows for a quicker return trip (1-2 days).
Facilities and Security: The Yatra is managed by the SASB, with extensive arrangements for security, medical aid, tents, and free meals (langars) provided by various organizations along the route. A mandatory RFID card is issued to all pilgrims for tracking and safety purposes.
Accessibility: For those unable to undertake the strenuous trek, helicopter services are available from the base camps to Panjtarni, which is about 6 km from the cave shrine.
