Eddy Current – Summary (Class 12 Physics)
🔹 Definition:
Eddy currents are loops of induced current produced in a conductor when it experiences a changing magnetic field.
🔸 Cause:
They are caused by **electromagnetic induction**—as per Faraday’s law—when a solid conductor moves through a magnetic field or when the magnetic field around it changes.
🔸 Characteristics:
Eddy currents flow in circular loops (like swirling eddies in water).
They oppose the change in magnetic flux (Lenz's law).
🔸 Formula (magnitude not usually required for theory):
No fixed single formula, but based on:
Induced emf, ε = -dΦ/dt
🔸 Effects:
Undesirable: Causes energy loss as heat (eddy current loss).
Desirable: Used in applications for braking and damping.
🔸 Applications:
Electromagnetic brakes in trains
Induction furnace (for metal heating)
Electric meters (for damping)
Magnetic levitation (maglev trains)
Metal detectors
🔸 Minimizing Eddy Currents:
Use of *laminated cores* in transformers and motors to reduce energy loss.
