This walk begins at the King George V Cricket field located in Patterdale adjacent to Ullswater.. Heading left out of the car park we find the sign for the coast to coast walk which you follow directly up Thornhowe End following obvious paths alongside Birks before heading up to the summit.. St Sunday Crag from here comes to view where a detour on a more comfortable path towards Gavel Pike is the better option as the more direct route involves much exposed rock and slight scrambles..
