Описание: In a major political development ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, senior Congress leader Bhupen Kumar Borah has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The former Assam Congress chief formally joined the BJP in the presence of State BJP President Dilip Saikia and BJP MP Baijayant Panda.

Borah had been associated with the Indian National Congress for over 32 years. A two-time MLA, he served as Assam Congress president from 2021 to 2025 and was considered one of the party’s most recognisable faces in the state.

Sources suggest Borah may contest the 2026 Assembly elections on a BJP ticket, possibly from Bihpuria or Rangandi constituencies.

Politically, the move is being viewed as a significant setback for Congress. Borah was seen as a key leader among the indigenous Hindu Assamese — Khilanjia — community, a crucial voter base in Upper and North Assam. Party insiders fear his exit could impact Congress prospects in nearly 45 Assembly seats across these regions.

Currently, apart from state president Gaurav Gogoi and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, the Congress faces a leadership gap among Hindu Assamese voters — making Borah’s switch a potentially decisive political blow.
