Valerie Dunbar sings "Always Argyll"
Valerie Dunbar was a Scottish singer from Rutherglen, near Glasgow.
The mother of three sang in ceilidhs and cabarets before marrying record producer Pete Shipton.
Pete helped launch Valerie on to the Scots music scene with her first single, “The Rowan Tree”, which became the best-selling Scottish single of 1979.
This hit inspired an album “A Portrait of Valerie Dunbar” and she toured in The Sound of Scotland and The Pride of the Clyde with the Alexander Brothers, Johnnie Beattie and Pete Morrison.
Pete sadly died in 1995.
Valerie had been treated for breast cancer but in March of 1999 she discovered it had returned and spread to her liver. She died on 11 May 1999 in St Margaret’s Hospice, Clydebank. She was 61 years old.
Valerie is survived by her son Alistair, 39, and daughters Gillian, 36, and Sandie, 32.
