This Fordson tractor is fitted with a Armstead Snow Motor.
It consists of two large interconnected screws with each controlled by a separate clutch, which enabled easy steering.
The vehicle is described as a screw-propelled vehicle or an archimedes screw.
The design was patented in 1920 and is the brainchild of Frederick R Burch of Seattle Washington.
The Snow Motor was designed to maneuver the deepest snow at speeds up to eight miles an hour. The vehicle gained the nickname snow devil.
The design proved somewhat impractical and by the end of the 1920s had disappeared from the marketplace.
