1. Don’t place light areas on the edges since they attract attention. We want the viewer to stay away from the edges, so he doesn’t leave the painting.
2. Dark values along the edges, in contrast, may benefit the picture by acting like a frame. But avoid having a dark uniform value completely surrounding the picture. Even if it represents a window frame with the scene beyond, provide a little variety in the darkness of the frame, while still making it look like one structure. Similarly, avoid having the darkest darks and the lightest lights on the outline of a form. The less a form is outlined, the more it appears to be 3D and integrated with adjacent areas.
3. With a large area of one value and a small area of another, have the third value cover an area that’s NOT halfway in-between.
4. Similarly, a middle value shouldn’t be halfway in-between two other values.
5. Passages (discussed in my last video) should be distributed around the picture.
6. Include some gradations, from light-to-dark or dark-to-light, because they're comforting and lively.
