La Confluencia es un punto central para toda la región del Alto Valle, donde los ríos Limay y Neuquén se unen para dar nacimiento al río Negro.

Los dos principales torrentes de la provincia confluyen allí, provenientes uno del norte y el otro del sur, uniendo sus fuerzas. El río Neuquén tiene 420 kilómetros de recorrido, nace a unos 2300 de altura y desemboca a unos 256 sobre el nivel del mar. Su cuenca abarca casi toda la mitad norte de la provincia de Neuquén y parte de la cordillera de los Andes. Sus aguas tiene un color turbio por los sedimentos del volcán Domuyo.

Por su parte el río Limay, recorre 500 kilómetros desde el lago Nahuel Huapi hasta llegar a la Confluencia, siendo uno de los espejos de agua más bellos y fascinantes de la Patagonia.

La cuenca de los ríos Limay, Neuquén y Negro, se encuentra situada en la parte norte de la región Patagónica y constituye el sistema hidrográfico más importante de todos los que se extienden integramente en el territorio de la Nación Argentina.
