'Inspired by Gibson' Epiphone ES339s are very good guitars. Gone is the naff headstock of yesteryear and the crappy plastic nut. Gone too are the terrible, uneven frets. Now you get NuBone nut, a Gibson-esque headstock, lovely fit and finish and some of the best frets around.
So why set one up? Because Chris wanted his guitar to be as light and low as I could possibly make it to help reduce his hand-fatigue, the result of a period of ill-health. So for all those who might want to comment that 'this guitar is perfect as it is out of the box' please consider that each customer has their own personal preferences and requirements.
Having set up dozens (probably!) of these by now I know that with a Tusq adjustable custom nut, a roller bridge and a precision set up with fret levelling, these guitars can play ultra-low and light (along with play and stay in tune). So that's what I'm doing here.
I also give a talk-through of how I approach truss rod adjustment - including demonstrating there and then the different cranking the truss rod makes. You'll hear this guitar go from perfectly playable to 100% choked out in a few turns on the hex key - and then back again to sweet playability to prove that YOU'RE in control of how the neck is set all year round, not me.
