L.L. takes out a late-2021 production PTR 91 GI 100 for a test run this winter. This is a classic, cold war battle rifle of yesterday. Chambered in a full rifle cartridge, .308 WIN or 7.62 NATO. The PTR 91 is a clone of the Heckler and Koch's roller-delayed G3 battle rifle which continues to have a significant presence in peace keeping duties.
Our PTR was factory new sporting the surplus green furniture. We swapped all that out quickly for an OEM HK pistol grip, POF wide forend, black PTR buttstock, HK21 rubber buttpad, and added a German made bipod and carry handle. We wanted to replicate that classic HK G3 look from from Val Kilmer's 1995 Heat.
We tried an array of surplus steel and aluminum HKG3 20-round magazines, all of which functions as they should. This particular rifle likes brass ammunition and gets a little finicky with steel cases ammo. After a good scrubbing of the chamber flutes with a .45 brass brush it seemed to like steel casings a bit more. We will report back once the rifle is fully broken in and hopefully it can reliably cycle the cheap steel casings.
