Joe Biden was interrupted as he gave a celebratory speech. His wife Jill Biden was quick to step in and hold off protesters.
The resurgent former Vice President rode a wave of momentum on Super Tuesday, declaring at a rally that he had "started a movement".
Mr Biden took eight states, including the battleground states of North Carolina and Virginia, while Mr Sanders has won Utah, Colorado and his home state of Vermont.
The two candidates are in a close runoff in Texas, the state with the second largest number of delegates on offer tonight.
