An unscientific test of a 12BH7 valve in an unmodified Thames and Kosmos Radio Ace radio receiver.

I am focusing on getting results on the shortwave bands, using the supplied shortwave coil.

The 12BH7 tube outperformed either the 12AT7 and 12AU7 tubes, but at a higher heater current 300mA @ 12v , which would rule out using AA batteries.

In an effort to improve results, I also try an indoor amplified magnetic loop antenna, specifically the K-180WLA, an MLA-30+ should work also.

This is located inside a residential house in Halswell, Christchurch, no fancy equipment or difficult installations necessary!!!
In fact the magnetic loop is hung in a built in closet/wardrobe inside a the house!
To be self supporting, the original wire was replaced with 12mm Aluminum flat bar sourced from the local hardware store..

I found, off camera that the later test at 2020hrs at night, that the K-180WLA still outperformed my basic and rather short - long-wire antenna.
And that the amplified K-180WLA should not radiate interference to other listeners, an added benefit.

This was recorded in October 2023, during daylight savings in new Zealand.
