ATM theft: Robbers take RM270,920 from Malaysia mall ATM machine

Robbers made off with RM270,920 from a shopping mall in Cheras, Malaysia after breaking into an ATM machine using an oxy-acetylene torch.

Police say they believe that at least one man was hiding in the bedding and home decor section after the store closed, and later let his accomplices in with their tools through the shutter doors at around 2.30 a.m.

The robbers spent an hour cutting through the ATM machine, but as there were no security guards at the mall that night, the crime was only discovered five hours later when a guard came to open the store.

Kajang deputy OCPD Supt Abdul Ghani Mohamad Ji said, "Based on CCTV footage, the crime was perpetrated by three men. There were no signs of forced entry, leading us to believe that at least one of them was already in the mall.

"We think he hid in the section selling beds and carpets. When no one was around, he came out of his hiding place and let his friends in through the front door.

"The ATM was only 10m from there."

The officials said the men did not cover their faces, but were wearing baseball caps and that CCTV footage was not clear enough for police to identify them.

"We have arrested two security guards who were responsible for loading the cash into the ATM on Saturday to assist in investigations," he added.
