'Turn It On Again (1980) by Genesis' (with Phil Collins on drums) is the perfect 'gateway' to odd time signatures. Not too craaaazy, an easily detectable beat, but still ultimately pretty anti 4/4... I explain how you can figure out, and start playing odd time signatures using this song as an example.
When I was first starting out, I learned a whole bunch about odd time signatures from taking apart Phil's drums in this song. So, as Phil has revealed all to me, I now reveal all to you... so to speak...

And there's a BANGIN' live version from the 80s here, taken off the 'Three Sides Live' record. You also get to see Phil properly reveal all during his 'shirtless pop-star phase', which is always a treat.

I love this tune. Genesis had a habit of making weird patterns sound pretty normal, and this song is a prime example! Devious, disguised as disco, but decidedly, definitely an odd-time signature. Until they switch into 4/4 later on of course...
Leave a comment and let me know how you get on :-)
Happy drumming,
