What is respite foster care and why is it so important?
In this short video, foster carer Neil explains what respite fostering is, in his own words. Respite foster care provides planned, short breaks for children and young people, and for the foster families who care for them day in, day out.
Respite care might be for a weekend, a few days during the school holidays, or at another agreed time. It helps children experience time in another safe and caring home, while supporting their main foster carers to rest, recharge or manage family commitments.
For children, good respite care is not about being moved around, it is about continuity, relationships and trust. Respite carers work closely with the child’s main foster carers and social worker so the experience feels calm, familiar and well planned.
Respite fostering is a valuable way to support the wider fostering community, and for some people it can be a first step into fostering, offering care that fits around work, family life or other commitments.
