+The Royal Mint released four different £2 coin designs to represent the four constituent countries of the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) participating in the Games.
Reverse Design: Features a moving figure of an athlete holding a banner, with the inscription "XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002" and the value "£2". The central cameo includes the flag of Wales. The design was created by Matthew Bonaccorsi.
Obverse Design: Features the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
Edge Inscription: The milled edge is inscribed with the text "SPIRIT OF FRIENDSHIP, MANCHESTER 2002".
Composition: The standard circulation coin is bi-metallic, with a cupro-nickel inner and a nickel-brass outer. Proof versions in precious metals like gold were also produced.
Value and Rarity
The value of the coin depends heavily on its condition and quality:
Circulated Condition: Approximately 588,500 of the Wales design coins were struck for circulation, making it the second rarest £2 coin to find in change based on mintage figures. A circulated coin is typically worth around £10, though prices from online merchants can be higher, around £19-£30.
Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Condition: These coins were produced to a higher standard and kept out of general circulation. They are generally valued at around £25, with some graded versions (e.g., NGC MS 68) selling for about £95.
Gold Proof Condition: A very limited number were issued in 22ct gold (only 315 coins). These are significantly more valuable, with graded examples selling for approximately £1,995 or more.
The coin is a popular collector's item due to its low mintage for a circulating coin

The 50p is a British 50-pence coin, introduced in 1969 to replace the 10-shilling note as part of the UK's decimalization. It is known for its unique equilateral curve heptagon shape, which is seven-sided but curved, making it easy to identify by touch and allowing it to roll smoothly in vending machines. The coin features a portrait of the monarch on one side and various designs, including the Royal Shield or commemorative images, on the reverse. A smaller, lighter version was introduced in 1997
