The moment was met by heckling from the chamber, including Tory MP Desmond Swayne shouting 'Rome is saved' and shouts of 'saviour' and 'turning water into water' as Burnham was sworn in.

This came just hours after Keir Starmer announced he would be resigning as prime minister, after which Burnham confirmed that he would stand as a candidate to become Labour leader
