One year ago, a friend of mine asked me to help him and other friends to write the music for a play. It was a school project: the students had to rewrite various works from ancient greek playwrights (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides) into one play.
The recurrent theme, that was present in all of the original plays, was the conflict between the Divine Laws and the Human Laws. It asked the question we still ask today: do we have a power over our choices, over our life, or is there some kind of force that we cannot resist to?
While the students were reading the texts from the play, two words grabbed my attention: "L'Oscuro Demiurgo" or, in english, "The Dark Demiurge". It seemed to me that these two words expressed perfectly the feeling of an obscure entity, standing in the shadows, that could bend the events, feelings, wishes, fortunes and misfortunes of our lives. For the Greeks, it was Zeus.
Unfortunately, I was not able to write the whole score, just a few ideas... and none of them were appropriate for a play. Anyway, this was the most complete amongst them.
