STORYLINE
Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Morocco on Monday for talks with his counterpart Abdelilah Benkirane, as anti-government protests continued in Turkey.
Erdogan arrived in the capital for the first leg of his four-day tour of North Africa.
His trip coincides with the fourth straight day of protests against his government with demonstrations spreading across several cities in Turkey.
Erdogan, accompanied by his wife, was greeted by Benkirane, with the pair enjoying a cup of tea together in the airport lounge.
The Turkish prime minister is also scheduled to hold talks with Morocco's Foreign Minister Saad-Eddine El Othmani, with discussions also planned with business leaders from both countries.
Erdogan is expected to leave Morocco for Algeria on Tuesday morning before travelling to Tunisia on Wednesday.
Before departing, Erdogan rejected protesters' demands that he should resign and dismissed the demonstrations as the work of Turkey's opposition.
The Turkish President Abdullah Gul, for his part, praised the mostly peaceful protesters as expressing their democratic rights.
Turkey has been rocked by violent demonstrations since Friday, when police launched a pre-dawn raid against a peaceful sit-in protesting plans to uproot trees in Istanbul's main Taksim Square.
Since then, the demonstrations by mostly secular-minded Turks have spiralled into Turkey's biggest anti-government disturbances in years.
Erdogan is due to return to Turkey on Thursday.
