2023 Highlander Fleet 14 65th Anniversary and Clambake

Описание: A truly amazing thing is that a One-Design Sailing Fleet, Highlander Fleet 14, is still present and accounted for on the shores of one of the Great Lakes, our BEAUTIFUL Natural Resource - Lake Erie. Not only do we exist but we have become the largest One-Design Fleet that has continuously raced on Lake Erie for 65 years! A great many centerboard fleets have been financially forced out of most traditional yacht clubs over the last 40 years. What saved Highlander Fleet 14 was the creation of a public marina dry sail area that was created at Whiskey Island Marina in 1996. This made it possible for affordable and sustainable Lake Erie access. Today, Highlander Fleet 14 has SIX (6) family sailing teams! Many thanks goes out to the Cleveland Metroparks who recognize our non-profit organization and continue to support our program. Fleet 14 exhibits at the Cleveland Boat Show each and every year where it makes it possible for the general public to learn about our organization and offers "Learn to Sail by Crewing" at no cost to those that are willing to commit their time to the program. Over time, many of those who made the commitment have bought their own Highlander and joined the fleet as a new skipper. We were founded at the first Cleveland Boat Show in 1958. One of the founders alongside Orville Wood - #200, the true father of Fleet 14, was Don Southam Highlander - #233. Don's daughter, Linda Merriam, along with husband Steve and daughter Diana on Highlander - #961 represent a third-generation sailing family.
