BD11s are the 188's new electric allocation, and are replacing Gemini 3 hybrids from 2017. The first electric 188 (EBD119 LA25EVP) entered service on the 10th of September. The 188 is expected to fully convert to BD11s by the end of the year. The Gemini 3 hybrids will transfer to Henley Road (DS) garage. Where they will be used on routes 330 and 474.

Route 188 runs between Tottenham Court Road and North Greenwich. The route serves New Oxford Street, Museum Street, Holborn Station, Aldwych Drury Lane, Waterloo Bridge, Waterloo Station, Elephant & Castle Station, New Kent Road, London Road, Bricklayers Arms, Caledonian Market, Boss Street, Bermondsey Station, St Olaves Estate, Canada Water Bus Station, Canada Street, Surrey Quays Leisure Park, Surrey Quays Station, Abinger Grove, Deptford High Street, Greenwich Town Centre, National Maritime Museum, Trafalgar Estate, Boord Street and North Greenwich Station.

The 188 runs every 10 to 12 minutes. The route runs a 24-hour service. It is operated by Go-Ahead London from Camberwell (Q) garage. The 188 uses 22 buses during the day. And 5 buses at night. The route is 10 miles (15 km) long. With a full journey taking around 50 to 100 minutes.

Route 188 started running in July 1951, meaning it's now over 71 years old. The route initially used Leyland Titan RTWs and AEC Regent RTs.

Routemasters replaced the RTWs in 1966. With the 188 converting to single deck operation with Leyland Swifts in 1971.

In July 1976, double deckers re-entered service with new Scania Metropolitans.

Leyland Titans then replaced the Scania Metropolitans in September 1982.

In November 1988, the 188 passed from London Transport to Boro'line. The route used Leyland Atlanteans and Daimler Fleetlines. These were previously used by Ipswich Buses and Nottingham City Transport.

Volvo Citybuses then replaced the Leyland Atlanteans and Daimler Fleetlines in 1989.

Boroline surrendered the route in November 1990. Meaning Selkent started running the route with Leyland Olympians. The 188 now started running from Plumstead garage instead of Crayford.

In November 1993, the 188 passed from Selkent to London & Country. London & Country used Titans from Walworth garage. British Bus bought London & Country in November 1993.

In January 1995, Volvo Citybuses entered service. British Bus was then sold to the Cowie Group (later Arriva) in August 1996. In August 1997, the 188's allocation transferred to Norwood (N) garage.

Part of the allocation was then transferred to Stamford Hill garage the next year.

In May 1999, the 188 was extended to North Greenwich Station. New ALX400s also entered service on the route.

In September 1999, the 188 was cut between Russell Square and Euston Station. The route then transferred to Tottenham (AR) garage in 2000.

In December 2000, London Central began running the route with ALX400s. New Plaxton Presidents then entered service.

In 2004, Wright Eclipse Geminis replaced the ALX400s.

In December 2005, the 188 passed to Travel London. The route started running from Walworth (WL) garage. New Wright Eclipse Geminis entered service.

In July 2007, a 24-hour service was introduced for the first time.

Travel London was then sold to Abellio in 2009.

The 188 was then retained by Abellio in December 2010. New ADL Enviro400 hybrids then entered service in January 2012.

In July 2012, the 188 was temporarily extende from Russell Square to Euston. This was due to the Olympic Games.

In November 2017, the 188 passed from Abellio to GoAhead. The route started running from Morden Wharf (MG) garage with new Gemini 3s.


In March 2018, the 188's allocation was transferred to Camberwell (Q) garage. New ADL Enviro400 MMCs entered service. At the same time, a crosslink with route X68 was introduced. This was removed in July 2023, when the X68 was withdrawn.

In September 2023, the 188 was cut between Russell Square and Holborn. It was then re-routed to Tottenham Court Road. This was to replace part of route 1, which was extended to Hampstead Heath. At the same time, the 188's allocation transferred to Morden Wharf (MG) garage.

In November 2024, the 188 was retained by GoAhead London Central.

The allocation then transferred back to Camberwell (Q) garage in August 2025.
