The site was originally built in the mid‑1970s by AT&T, as a satellite communications/earth‑station facility, and consisted of a pair of 30‑meter (~100 ft) Cassegrain‑fed parabolic antennas / satellite‑dishes.
"The Cove" area was selected because its topography is believed to be the result of an ancient asteroid impact, its 40 km-wide crater disguised by eons of erosion.
By the late 1970s or early 1980s, the facility became obsolete for AT&T’s purposes and was abandoned. In 1992, the installation was acquired by Georgia Tech for potential use in radio‑astronomy / satellite communications research. In 1996, the SETI Institute provided support for a full upgrade of the southern antenna in order to use it as part of their targeted, coherent signal search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) called Project Phoenix. By the mid 2000s, it appeared to have been abandoned and suffering from decay and neglect.
The was site featured in the television show, The Walking Dead, season 3 and 4 in 2012 and 2013.
