Red Cloud - Only Native American to win war against US The conflict known as Red Cloud's War (1866-1868) was a direct response to the U.S. government violating the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie. The treaty had recognized the Powder River Country as Lakota territory, but the discovery of gold further west led to a flood of miners and settlers using the Bozeman Trail, which cut through these ancestral lands. The U.S. military began building forts along the trail to protect the travelers, an act of aggression in the eyes of the tribes.
In response, Red Cloud forged a powerful alliance between the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. One of the war's most decisive moments was the Fetterman Massacre in December 1866, where warriors led by Crazy Horse lured Captain William J. Fetterman and his entire command of 80 soldiers into a devastating ambush. The U.S. unit was completely annihilated, marking the army's most severe defeat on the Great Plains to that date and demonstrating the strategic power of the tribal coalition.
