Introduction

The Golden handed Tamarin goes by a couple of names such as stated The golden-handed tamarin also known as the red-handed tamarin or Midas tamarin

The Golden handed Tamarin is a New World monkey, they are also related to marmosets, other tamarins, and lion tamarins as shown in the photo
This species is native to the Amazon river basin in Brazil,Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname and
Venezuela.

Size

These little guys and they are small, only reaching a length of 20 to 28 cm or 8 to 11 inches and weighing
about 400 to 500 grams or about 1lb, live in groups of 4 to 15 members .

Society

The group is a matriarchy society led by the eldest female and is made up of manly males. The group's
main priority is defence, they are also very territorial and can be very aggressive for their size. They
have claws instead of finger nails on every toe except their big toe, and also very sharp canine teeth. The
claws come in very handy when they are climbing and jumping from tree to tree.

Life style

The Golden handed Tamarin are boreal and also spent most of their time awake during the day and sleeping at night they’re also exceptional climbers and spends most of the time in the vines and branches there quick and agile and
superb jumpers known to jump distance of over 60 feet from tree to the ground with no sign of injury.
The mating habits and reproduction of this little primate is they are polyandrous (meaning the female
mates with more than one male, only one female in the group will breed during the breeding season
(April to July), the rest will suppress the instinct to mate.

Pregancy

The gestation period is about 140 -170 days. They have one little evolutionary trick to keep their
population up is when they give birth normally to Twins. The father will look after the young infants
when it is time to nurse, however it is a group effort and all the group give a hand to raise the
young infant.

Diet

The Golden handed Tamarin are omnivores; their diet consists of ripe fruit flowers, nectar, insects, frogs spiders and lizards.

Life Span

The life span is normally 10 to 15 years but like most creatures it will live longer in captivity.
Normally at this point of the video i'm saying that this species is under threat, but im happy to report
that according to the IUCN these little guys are of least concern and are not looking at extinction,

Predators

Due to its size its main predators include small wild cats, birds of prey eagles, such as eagles and snakes such as boa constrictors and anacondas.

Red-handed tamarins sleep in camouflaged branches of trees and do not use
burrows or hollows Like other members of their Family they
sleep together in groups, and huddling behaviour conserves energy which is vital in small-bodied
primates.
