The Murma mela, organized every year at Murma in Mandar on Ranchi-Lohardaga road, around 20km from Ranchi.Worship, dance, music, fun and fiesta mark the two-day festival, which sees lakhs of people every years
Celebrated mainly by the Oraon tribe, the fair has an interesting myth surrounding it. Former head of the tribal and regional languages department of Ranchi University, Girdhari Ram Gaunjhu explained, “It is believed that people of the Munda tribe were the orginal residents of Murma.
But with the migration of Oraon tribe to the area, the Mundas raised a strong objection. It was decided that the dispute will be settled by a music and dance competition between the two tribes. The tribe which would lose would have to leave the area.”
He added, “The fight continued for seven days and seven nights in which the Oraons came out victorious due to the possession of a special musical instrument, Mandar which the Mundas did not have. However, after winning, the Oraons asked the Mundas not to leave and stay together peacefully. But the Mundas did not agree. They kept their word and migrated to Khunti.”
The Murma festival is celebrated by the Oraon tribe to celebrate this victory. However, Mundas participate in the festival too. The fair has various flavours, right from religious sacrifice and worship to cultural activities like dance and music.
On the occasion, the Mundas organize ‘Bonga Puja’. Gaunjhu said, “Bonga, a Mundari term means the great powers which include gods, ghosts and omens. The Mundas worship the good bongas like Eki Bonga (water god) and Hatu Bonga (village god) to please them for prosperity, while the bongas with negative powers are also worshipped such that they do not harm people.” Similarly, the Oraons worship ‘Dharme’ or ‘Dharmesh’ which are the natural powers.
A variety of goods and edibles are sold in the markets during the fair. These include musical instruments like dhol, nagada, dhak , mandar (percussion), bheir, narsingha and bansuri (wind instruments) and also different types of weapons like bow and arrow, dauli, hasua and others.
‘Henruwa’ and ‘Kachri’ are the two most favourite food items sold in the fair. While Henruwa is new bamboo stick chopped finely and dried to make chutney, kachri is like small papad which is sour in taste and made of a special fruit called ‘dimbu’. Kachri is fried in oil with salt and is eaten with main course.
The festival marks an important time for young boys and girls expecting to get married. Gaunjhu said, “At the fair, if a girl and boy end up liking each other, their families talk about their marriage in the ‘Devdhan’ festival, which is celebrated after Diwali.
