Frome BP. " Background: A new campaign of bomb scares disrupted the Christmas rush in Belfast today (Thursday). Anonymous callers told security forces that bombs had been placed in three cars parked on bridges crossing the River Lagan.
In each case, the bridges had to be closed to traffic while army marksmen tried to detonate the bombs with rifle-fire. When this failed, a small explosive charge was used to slow the boot lid open on each of the cars. And in each case, it turned out to be a box.
But when the same operation was carried out on a car parked in busy Grosvenor Road, close to the city centre, a bomb exploded destroying the car and shattering windows. All nearby buildings had been evacuated and there were no casualties.
B.B.C. cameras were on the spot to film the Army's bomb disposal units dealing with the hoaxes and with the one call that turned out to be genuine. The new-style campaign coincided with Prime Minister Edward Heaths top secret visit to Northern Ireland, which is covered in our Production Number 15225/71 NORTHERN IRELAND: BRITISH PRIME MINISTER HEATH PAYS SURPRISE VISIT TO ULSTER TROOPS...also serviced today
